Treasured Islands: An Environmental Handbook for Teachers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Sunita Rao, 1996; Revised Edition 1999, Hindi Version, 2000

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India are one of the world’s finest examples of a tropical island ecosystem. Endowed with diverse habitats ranging from rain forests to the open ocean, they are also home to ancient hunter-gatherer tribes and a mosaic of people settled here from the Indian mainland.
This handbook is aimed at teachers of the islands to help them initiate environmental awareness among students in schools. It can also be easily adapted for use in other island and coastal ecosystems. This book contains basic information on oceans, coral reefs, beaches, mangroves, rain forests, indigenous tribes, human impact on the environment and checklists of selected mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, coral and plants.
Generously illustrated with drawings and colour plates, the handbook also contains full descriptions of 45 activities for teachers to do with the students. These include many action tips to help save the islands from the threats they face.
