April' 05
At 112/113/114/115 Shukrawar Peth, 6-7 trees were illegally cut by Home Developer Builders. The builder without obtaining permission from the garden department cut 6- 7 big trees that were standing on this property. A complaint was given by Vinod on 7th April '05 and subsequently after a site visit by the garden department on the 15th April'05 a report stating the absence of any trees on the said property was prepared. This was confirmed by the landlord. Vinod received a letter from the Garden department stating that no illegal cutting of trees was done. Vinod however pursued this matter with the PMC several times and in April he received a reply that one tree was cut illegally for which a fine had been slapped on the landlord. He has photographs to substantiate this.Vinod has since then asked for information under the right to information act with regard to this and other queries such as tree census data from 1975-2005. The latter he has still not received. Vinod adds that he wants to create awareness among people that tree felling is a crime and that proper care should be taken also to protect the birds and their nests on the trees. The environment balance can only be maintained if more trees are planted. According to him no care is taken to protect birds as the tree authority does not possess the necessary equipment.

Tree felling at Kubera Park
This alert was sent by Tasneem. A number of trees were being felled in in Kubera Park Society, Lullanagar. This is the second time that they were trying to cut down the trees after their first attempt was reported to Khaire, and permission was denied for the same. This was duly reported to the garden superintendent, Mr Khaire. Apparently action has been taken and the society has been slapped with a fine amount. When Tasneem met some of the society members on the 29th sept they gave her a site visit (2 acres of beautiful land that existed in a concrete jungle) . They took her along the jogging track showing me the path they devised so that they could save as many trees as possible. They also showed her the number of trees that they had planted and many more that they would plant. They shared with her a number of examples where trees where cut off ina jiffy to suit the whims of the corporator. But they were expected to go strictly by the rules inspite of planting so many trees.

Tree Felling for Road Widening at Karve Nagar
An alert sent by Mr Ravindra Latey has got some of us together to oppose the road widening plan on Karve Rd. This, we feel and are sure that will directly and indirectly affect 100 plus trees that are along that road.
On the 13th of Sept after much lobbying by some members of the group the alternative proposal for Storm water duct, service duct etc, proposed by us, was accepted by the PMC. With the proposed new design, the width of the trench will be reduced substantially and many trees will be saved. On that same day when Mr Nitin Kareer along with PMC officials visited the Karve Road site he gave a patient hearing to our proposal and accepted the same on the spot. He also considered our point on availability of parking space along the road. The width of the various proposed lanes will be reviewed to create space for parking at identified locations. He instructed the officials to redraw the layout with these changes. We are hopeful that, with the new design, many trees will be saved. Of course, this is not the end of the project. We need to be equally vigilant till the final drawings are made.

Bund Garden to Ramwadi Octroi Road concreting
The road from Bund Garden to Ramwadi Octroi post is being concreted,In the last stretch from Shastri Nagar to Ramwadi, a land belonging to the Military might be acquired for road widening, this military land has many trees and this is what I think might be cut down if the permission is granted by the military to expand the road in their premises.

Mangaldas/Naylor Road
As reported by our member Satish Khot, on a construction site on Mangaldas Road/ Naylor Road an excavator was being used to dig the foundation. The digging seemed to be very close to the trees. So a group of them got together and went to the site and found that the excavations had exposed the roots of one tree. Further, the excavations had reached very close to the second tree - a magnificent rain tree with a diameter of about 10 feet. They asked for the certified drawings, commencement certificate, permission to cut trees, telephoned all and sundry - Ward Officer, City Engineer, Gardens Superintendent, police chowki. And it worked. It was found that permission had not been given to cut these two trees and the buildings to be constructed were no where close to these trees. The builder reined in his excavator and filled up the extra excavation that he had done.

Prosenjit Biswas and Cletus Vaz, live in Shivanand Gardens, behind TATYA Tope society, Wanorie - Pune 40 wrote to the group. Their housing complex is adjuscent to Green Belt of SRPF complex. They have been observing continual cutting of the trees by miscreants. We had taken some pictures of these. They would like to contact some organization who can take this up with the right authority in Pune so that this systematic destruction of environment is stopped. Vinod jain and Tasneem followed up on this alert and with the help of the residents actively interacted with Mr Khaire and SRPF authorities on this issue. A notice has gone to the SRPF. Pune Tree Watch has not had any follow-up or update from them since then.
