TREES FOR DELHI Joint Inspection Letters to the Chief Minister Press Releases Campaign with Citizens |
Kalpavriksh (KV) has been
involved in networking and campaign for environmental advocacy since its
inception in 1979. It began as youth-led campaigns to save the Delhi Ridge
Forest – a green lung that is critical to the ecological stability of the
metropolis; and over the years members have kept the issue alive in their
hearts and in action. Delhi as a city has witnessed large-scale tree deaths in the last few years. Whereas necessary developmental projects like metro rail do involve cutting down of trees, in Delhi the tree deaths have also been due to large-scale avoidable municipal construction activities in the vicinity of green areas. Besides avenue trees, the protection of the ridge forest, green areas, open spaces and public parks becomes critical for the ecological well being of the city. Public awareness and involvement, media coverage, lobbying, and education are important components to build up a healthy partnership with public agencies. When public-spirited citizens act as sustained pressure groups, public agencies are compelled to fall in line. The Urban Greens Campaign has attempted to raise concerns both with citizens and to government through various ways. This is both at organisational level as well as through network. |
