Nagaland



Degrading forests, high rate of hunting, conflicts between the local leaders
and the Indian Army, among other reasons have led to a severe depletion of
wild animal populations in Nagaland. However, over the last decade a silent
conservation movement is gaining momentum, where village communities and
individuals are declaring either inviolate zones for wildlife protection or
seasonal hunting bans. Read more...


In oder to recognise and understand the community conservation initiatives
in Nagaland a state level workshop was organised by Nagaland Empowerment of
People and Economic Development (NEPED), ICIMOD (Kathmandu), Forest
Department (Nagaland), and Kalpavriksh (Pune).

Khonoma village in Nagaland is probably the most well known village within
and outside of the state. The village is famous for its great warriors,
enchanting culture, unique agreicultural techniques, lush forestsand having
produced some of the greatest leaders, poets, singers, and dancers of
Nagaland. Few people however know about their unique effort at conservation
